Access on a civil or infrastructure site is rarely one-size-fits-all.
Excavations, changing ground conditions, existing structures, machinery and different work areas can all create unique challenges for getting people safely where they need to be.
That’s why we believe the best access solutions start with properly understanding the problem.
UNDERSTANDING THE CLIENT’S PROBLEM
Before we suggest anything, we like to get boots on the ground.
A site visit gives our team the opportunity to understand the environment, how people need to move through it and exactly what challenge needs solving.
From there, we work through the best approach.
Sometimes it’s an off-the-shelf platform. Sometimes it means adapting an existing design. And other times, it requires a fully custom solution engineered around the site requirements.
The goal is to provide access that works for the site safely, practically and efficiently.
CUSTOM ACCESS FOR A LANDMARK INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT
With major civil works underway at Auckland International Airport, led by Hawkins, safe access across excavations, ground beams and changing work areas was essential throughout the project.
SafeSmart supplied a range of access solutions to help crews move safely and efficiently around the site, including Formwork Stepovers, AdaptaSpan Bridges, AdjustaStairs and Truck Platforms.
Rather than relying on one standard product across the project, different solutions were used to suit the access requirements of each area.
It’s a good example of how understanding the site first allows the right solution to be applied where it’s actually needed.

ENGINEERED ACCESS FOR CRITICAL WATER INFRASTRUCTURE
At the Wellsford Wastewater Treatment Plant, our team is currently designing and manufacturing custom fixed aluminium stairs around the facility’s specific access and operational requirements.
Rather than adapting a standard stair system to fit, the solution has been designed around the site.
For water and wastewater infrastructure, factors such as durability, corrosion resistance and long-term maintenance are also important considerations when selecting an access solution.
Aluminium provides a lightweight, durable and corrosion-resistant option suited to demanding infrastructure environments.
This project demonstrates how access can be considered as part of the wider facility rather than treated as an afterthought.
MORE THAN AN EQUIPMENT SUPPLIER
The earlier access is considered, the more opportunity there is to identify challenges and develop the right solution before they become bigger problems on site.
SafeSmart works alongside contractors, engineers and project teams from site consultation and concept development through to engineering, manufacturing and delivery.
Whether the requirement is for temporary construction access, permanent stairs and platforms, bridges, work platforms or a completely bespoke engineered system, our team looks at the wider site and works through what will perform best for the application.
LET'S SOLVE YOUR NEXT ACCESS CHALLENGE
