Lend Lease – Easy Stak Modular Pedestrian Access

The Challenge:

To allow safe and weather-proof daily access across two roads, for over 600 workers on the Sydney Harbour Barangaroo project. The workers needed to move easily between the ground level on the southern end and the ground level and level 1 and 2 on the northern end.

Lend Lease needed a system that was flexible and simple to install with minimal disruption to the busy site. There were tight space constraints, and Australian compliance requirements to adhere to.

The Solution:

SafeSmart designed a high tensile aluminium structure using Easy Stak – a modular system designed to provide pedestrian access for temporary or permanent applications.

Easy Stak is constructed from high tensile aluminium, making the system very simple and quick to install. The marine grade aluminium is a high-tensile T6 class, so the modules will not deteriorate over time and the inherent strength of the material provides high durability. The system is compliant to AS1657:2013, which enables it to be rated up to 10kpa.

The Barangaroo access unit was custom-designed to fit around the tight confinements of the site. The structure was pre-assembled off-site and simply craned into place onto three support towers. The total installation time of fewer than 6 hours was remarkable considering the project was almost 40 metres in length comprising two stretcher stair towers over 8 metres high.

The installers said that working with aluminium was a huge advantage. “Being lightweight we could swing the large pieces into position with ease, ensuring tolerances didn’t pose a problem.”

The Result:

Lend Lease has a robust and durable structure, providing workers with weatherproof access across two roads and into the site. The bridge takes workers from the ground on the southern end and access to ground and levels1 and 2 on the northern end. The clear sides provide an inspirational view of the Sydney Harbour on their daily commute.

Aluminium makes this unit much lighter to transport and easier to install than steel. It can be flat packed into stillages for storage and transportation, and the marine grade aluminium means there is no risk of rust or corrosion.

Unlike scaffolding, the weatherproofed unit was able to be pre-assembled off-site and craned into position with no scaffolder’s ticket required.
