A Better Way to Deliver Edge Protection on Bridge Projects Mill Flat Road Bridge | Case Study

The Challenge

The Mill Flat Road Bridge project required a side-mounted edge protection system that could remain in place while a 350mm in-situ kerb was formed and poured.

The solution needed to:

  • Provide compliant edge protection without interfering with the kerb pour
  • Support formwork during the in-situ concrete pour
  • Avoid drilling into finished structural elements
  • Reduce working-at-height risks during installation

Conventional edge protection systems could not meet these requirements without adding unnecessary complexity or multiple temporary works systems.

A Better Way to Approach Edge Protection

SafeSmart Access worked closely with JFC Construction to deliver a better way to achieve safe, compliant edge protection on the Mill Flat Road Bridge.

We supplied a Side Mount Non-Drill Edge Protection System, connected to 2.5-tonne cone anchors cast into the side of the hollow core beams. This allowed the edge protection posts to be installed before the beams were lifted into position.

Using cast-in anchors as the connection points:

  • Enabled ground-level installation
  • Removed the need for post-install work at height
  • Significantly sped up the edge protection installation process

Engineered for Confidence

Our team collaborated with JFC Construction to provide a full design and engineering report, confirming compliance and load capacity, including the system’s ability to support the in-situ kerb formwork.

This engineered approach provided the project team with the confidence to proceed with an innovative solution that delivered a safer, more efficient outcome.

Why This Edge Protection System Was Chosen

The Non-Drill Post & Handrail System offered a better way to manage edge protection by:

  • Allowing safe, non-drill installation
  • Remaining clear of the in-situ kerb pour
  • Integrating formwork support into the edge protection system
  • Eliminating the need for multiple temporary works systems
  • Reducing time, labour, and site risk

The Result

  • Safe, compliant edge protection throughout construction
  • Reduced exposure to working at height
  • Faster installation and improved programme efficiency
  • Fully engineered temporary works documentation to support compliance
