At Safesmart Access, we thrive on solving complex access challenges. Our recent collaboration with Summit Scaffolding on the O Mahurangi – Penlink project showcases this perfectly. The ambitious new 7km highway will transform connectivity, featuring six bridges, including the impressive Wēiti River bridge the largest on the project.
The Challenge
The Wēiti River bridge is a feat of engineering, spanning over 530 metres long and towering 45 metres above the river. Constructing this bridge required extensive temporary works, including safe, reliable access for crews working on the jump form system used to build the piers.
Here’s the complication:
As the columns are angled outward, causing the distance between to increase as the formwork climbed higher. The project needed a solution that was engineered, modular, and fast to install to avoid slowing the site progress.
Our Solution:
To meet this challenge, Safesmart Access partnered with Summit Scaffolding to design a bespoke modular scaffold setup. Using our AdaptaSpan bridge system in conjunction with ProScaf, we created a flexible, heavy-duty access system that could adapt as the build advanced.

- Modular design: Allowed for fast adaptation as pier positions changed.
- Prebuilt off-site: Summit Scaffolding assembled the stairs on a lay-down – away from teh waters-edge.
- Craned into place: Minimised downtime and maximised site safety.
